Been reading a bit into the method of playing Gears online
It will be handled my Microsoft Game for windows system (LIVE) kinda like the xbox LIVE already in place. Good news for those with an exsisting Xbox LIVE account - you will be able to use it on your PC as well
Check out some info on LIVE here and the Gears page on their site here

So, PC users will be able to play X360 users? Or is that a "Gold" feature only...

The way the sustem will work is the free LIVE sibscription will only allow you to play against other PC users. The gold subscription will allow you to play cross platform.

"This game will most likely NOT support cross-platform play allowing PC gamers and XBOX 360 gamers to play together in the same game. While it works well with Shadowrun, there’s no sign of that happening in Gears."
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Yeah, it was said Halo 2 Vista was supposed to have cross platform capabilities, but it never happened. I guess the idea will take a little longer than expected to catch on.

The idea of it is really cool tho... It just shows how we're advancing with technology etc. I never thought this sort of stuff would happen

Well, just look at the games from the last 5 years, incredible difference! I figure in another 3-5 years, we will see cross platform capabilities and then some.

There have been a number of cross-platform capable games in the past. From the top of my head I can name two, Quake 3 Arena (PC and Dreamcast) and Final Fantasy XI (PC, PS2, and XBox 360). Cross-platform gaming is nothing new, though it is quite rare these days.
